I bought this voodoo flag in 1986 (see post on voodoo flags, above). It’s a quite plain flag with a veve calling design dedicated to the goddess Erzulie-Freda (at the top above the heart veve, you can just discern the word FREDA). Note that this flag has a loop (top left) for hanging it from a pole, unlike newer flags. This flag was meant to be used in ceremonies; most flags today are far more sophisticated in design and have no loop. Contemporary flags are also often signed with the full name of the artist who created their design. Note the simple initials (bottom) on the flag above: the artist was not the major event in the old voodoo flags — the god’s the thing.
